Earth Footwear – A Fitness Routine Even *I* Can Do!

When I was younger, I have to admit, I was pretty lucky. I could eat what I wanted, and I spent quite a bit of time outside burning off food just a quickly as I ate it, I think. I was slim and trim, and some might argue I was a little too trim.

Several years and two kids later, this is no longer the case. Not by a long shot.

Oh, and have I mentioned that I’m not a big fan of exercising? I do it, and I enjoy it when I do it, but if I have to choose to catch up on my TiVo viewing or put on my sneakers and go work out, chances are you will find me on the sofa. Bon-bon free, of course.

So while I was at Type A Mom Conference in September, I took notice of a company called Earth Footwear who was allowing us to try out their new ExerWalk Sneakers. And boots.

Boy did I really want those boots…

But I digress…

Earth Footwear selected me as one of the bloggers to try their new ExerWalk Sneakers for 30 days in a promotion called Change Your Life In 30 Days. The mission? To wear the shoes and walk around in them. A LOT. Then report back and share my insights.

I have been using the shoes now for 9 days, and with the exception of that I wake up kind of sore each morning (like I had a great workout the day before), I am finding that the shoes are really great!

Sneakers are hard for me. I struggle to find a comfortable sneaker that I can wear for long periods of time. The Earth ExerWalk sneakers are so comfortable and easy to wear, I find myself wearing them longer than I would normally wear shoes (I like to walk around barefoot) in my house. That for me is rare.

The shoes modify how you walk. So before when I walk around my neighborhood listening to techno, the shoes provide a resistance I was not expecting. It made walking to the beat rather difficult, but I was able to do it. That could explain the reason why I am so sore though…

I really like these shoes. I’m feeling the effects already, and I’m looking forward to seeing the effects after the 30 days. To see how I’m doing each day, follow me on Twitter to see my daily updates!

Come on Feel The Noise – Rock of Ages Original Broadway Cast Recording

ROAimage

First, the important information:

New Line Records just hammered the in-store release of the Original Broadway Cast Recording of five-time Tony Award nominated “ROCK OF AGES.” For those of you not in the know, Rock of Ages is the new Broadway musical starring American Idol finalist Constantine Maroulis . Set in 1987 in a legendary Sunset Strip rock club, a small-town girl meets a big-city dreamer and they fall in love to the greatest metal songs of the 80′s. The musical is an arena-rock love story told through the mind-blowing, face-melting hits of Journey, Bon Jovi, Styx, Reo Speedwagon, Pat Benatar, Foreigner, Twisted Sister, Poison, Asia, Whitesnake and more.

Tracklisting

Just Like Paradise / Nothin’ But A Good Time
Sister Christian
We Built This City / Too Much Time On My Hands
I Wanna Rock
We’re Not Gonna Take It
Heaven/More Than Words / To Be With You
Waiting For A Girl Like You
Wanted Dead Or Alive
I Want To Know What Love Is
Cum On Feel The Noize / We’re Not Gonna Take It (Reprise)
Harden My Heart / Shadows Of The Night
Here I Go Again
The Final Countdown
Any Way You Want It / I Wanna Rock (Reprise)
High Enough
I Hate Myself For Loving You / Heat Of The Moment
Hit Me With Your Best Shot
Can’t Fight This Feeling
Every Rose Has Its Thorn
Oh Sherrie
The Search Is Over
Don’t Stop Believin’

And now, my thoughts:

I wanted to like this CD, and I have to say, it was a very good thing the days I listened to it I was in the company of very good friends that like Broadway musicals and theater. (Hat tip to Greg and Cathy!)

And I did like it. Sort of. I mean what’s not to like? It has songs from my youth, many of which I still listen to either on my iPod, or on the local Classic Rock radio station. I’m also a fan of really good cover bands, so I thought since this was Broadway, I’d have the best of the best cover bands performing the songs of my youth.

In some cases I did. In others, not so much.

One of the big things I found very frustrating was just as I was getting into a song, it switched to another in a medley or just stopped altogether. My friends kindly pointed out to me that that’s how it is done in musical theater. So I gave that a pass.

But it was still very frustrating.

The other thing that I found annoying was the music was used not so much to hear those songs again, but because they signify plot points in the show. I have yet to see the show (When it makes it’s way to Orlando I’m hoping to!) but until I do, it’s hard not to be confused because I don’t know fully what the context is. I saw a small snippet from the Tonys this past year and I have to say, it looked good.

Real, real, good. Kind of campy, just like the 80′s.

If you like Broadway musicals and you are a fan of the 1980′s, I think you will enjoy this CD. If you have already seen the performance, you will enjoy it more I think. I have a feeling you will also want to see the performance when it comes to your town.

I do.

A very good friend summed this up by saying: “This reminds me of The Wedding Singer on speed.” I have to agree with her.

Live the Dream! Become a Pirate at The Pirate’s League!

Last week, Scamp and I were given the opportunity to head out to the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World to become pirates and join Jack Sparrow’s crew!

Seeing as we had planned to go out to Disney anyway, we jumped at the chance. So while my husband and Spiff tore off to ride some rides, we sauntered into The Pirates League to take up the pirate way of life!

Pirate Preparations

We started by trying to figure out what our pirate names are. By using a scientific method, some dice, a locked box and a wheel (and a book to look things up in!), we quickly ascertained what our pirate names are.

picking pirate names

Meet Hector Dreadfoote.

picking pirate names 1

Meet Bettie Tackrash.

Then we got down to business. Makeup was applied, stories swapped, and hearty cheers of “Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate’s life for me!” were heard as we watched the transformations take place:

Cute pirate

We took the pirate oath, and then we were told we could go into a super secret room. A room only pirates go into. Holding Hector’s hand, we went in..

…and it was in here where our transformations were complete.

PirateRyan

We had the time of our life and once we solved the secret code and went on an adventure we spent the rest of the day roaming the parks as swashbuckling pirates. You haven’t LIVED until you have spent the day at Disney looking like a pirate!

The Pirates League offers 3 packages— All packages include a sword and sheath, earring and eye patch, tattoo, exclusive pirate coin necklace, map case folder, and a personalized pirate oath!

The First Mate Package at $49.95 plus tax includes:

* Bandana (reversible)
* Choice of Facial Effect look: Cursed Pirate, Captain Hook or Captain Jack
* Fake Teeth
* One (1) 5×7 picture

Empress Package at $49.95 plus tax includes:

* Bandana (reversible)
* Vibrant and Bold Makeup Makeover
* Face Gem
* Nail Polish
* One (1) 5×7 picture

Additional pirate costumes for this package are available for purchase at The Pirates League.

The Captains Package at $124.95 plus tax includes:

* Choice of pirate costume
* Choice of Facial Effect look: Cursed Pirate, Captain Hook or Captain Jack
* Fake Teeth
* Three (3) 5″ x 7″ pictures

To see the transformation in all of it’s glory behold the slideshow below:

Created with flickr slideshow.

I met up with some friends after we left The Pirates League. One of my friends asked me was it worth it to do this. I said at least once in your life you absolutely, totally should. It was fun for me, it was fun for my son, and it was like Halloween in August. Actually, they have helped me decide what I’m dressing up as for Halloween this year!

Special thanks to Charles Stovall, Erin Catalano, and the entire Disney Media team. You guys are wonderful, and thank you for this opportunity!

I’m your ice cream (wo)man, stop me when I’m passin’ by*

(UPDATE! Congratulations to Drew G and Virginia for winning the contest! Thanks to everyone for playing!!!)

It’s summertime! Time for the sun, the beach, and the jingle of the Ice Cream truck in your neighborhood.

For the kids, of course. You? You’re older now, and have more refined tastes. No mere Rocket Pop for you, uh-uh!

What you want is Haagen Dazs Five.

haagen-dazs-five-brown-sugar-ice-cream-with-warm-apple-cinnamon-blossoms-224x300

A couple of months ago, I was included in a video conferencing call about Haagen Dazs Five with several other bloggers. The discussion focused on how the ice cream is only made with five ingredients.

And the FLAVORS!! Simple never sounded so good! They are Vanilla Bean, Coffee, Mint, Brown Sugar, Milk Chocolate, and Passion Fruit. After the call concluded, I was psyched to go find this delicious creation in my local grocery store. And, I was kind of really hungry.

It was nowhere to be found. Seriously. I think I annoyed the heck out of several store managers with “Can you pleeeeease go check in the back?” “Are you sure you don’t have any?” Luckily I know them personally, so I know I can at least shop there still.

But then, one glorious day, I walked into the store, went to the frozen section, and found this:

ginger

This, folks, is manna from Heaven. I have searched for Ginger ice cream that is not chunky, that is smooth, and melts in your mouth.

My search is over. This ice cream completes me. It could quite possibly complete you too.

My husband is also a bit of a Mint ice cream snob. No, seriously, he is. The ice cream can not be green, it must be white. If it has chocolate chips in it, they must not be over powering, so they do not ruin the minty goodness.

I’m sure I do not have to tell you many ice creams have let my husband down. It’s tragic to see a grown man cry over ice cream.

So guess what? You totally know where this is going:

mint

Let’s just say I heard lots of mmmmm-hmmmmm‘s and the spoon scraping the sides and bottom of the pint. I’d say it’s a winner.

He’d say so too if he wasn’t busy eating.

__________________________________________________________

So, want some? I have two gift certificates to give away to two different commenters that are good for one pint of Haagen Dazs Five ice cream.

All you have do to get these coupons outta my grubby little hands win is:

1. Comment here about what flavor you’ll try if you win.

2. Tweet the contest and leave a comment here with the tweet link, but use the #HDFive and @shash, please.

THE RULES:

Contest runs from midnight June 11th through midnight June 16th.

No duplicate comments. Winners will be selected by random drawing and will be notified by email (so make sure you put the correct email in your comment!). You have 48 hours to get back to me once you are notified, otherwise a new winner will be selected.

…And GO!

* Title for this post is from the awesome Van Halen song Ice Cream Man. Is that song now stuck in your head yet? You’re welcome.

Shash’s BookShelf Mondays: The Military Wives Cookbook

I have a secret to confess, and nows as good a-time as any…

…come closer…

closer…

Ok. Now, ready?

I used to be a Navy Wife. I was married to a man in the United States Military for 5 years. My current (and lifetime) husband was also in the United States Navy. So I guess you could say I have some knowledge on the subject of being a Military Wife.

I now have so much more. Not to mention a continued respect for the wives who serve right along with their husbands! (And you can too!!*)

militarywivesDanielle (everyone should nave a Danielle in their life!) sent me a copy of “The Military Wives Cookbook” 200 Years of Traditions, Recipes and Remembrances by Carolyn Quick Tillery.

And yes, it is a cookbook. So no false advertising there. However, interspersed in between all the delicious recipes are stories about how dishes were prepared, quotes from famous military wives, and tidbits from every battle America has fought. I have to say, it’s an interesting read even beyond the recipes.

But the recipes!! The recipes span from simple fare to extravagant holiday dinners. You know the recipes are going to be something special when you see in the contents titles such as:

– Moroccan Magic
– An Idyllic Italian Afternoon
– Twelfth Night: A Williamsburg Buffet for Eight
– Company’s Coming Lasagna Dinner
– A Sunday Reunion With Very Dear Friends
– Rising Sun Breakfast From Japan

Many of the recipes are simple. Two of my new favorites are the Chocolate Amaretto Cake (pg. 178) and the Garden Salad (pg. 316). I’m also compiling several recipes to make for our family Sunday dinners. The entire section of An Idyllic Italian Afternoon is already planned for my Mother’s Day feast.

Now all I have to do is let the Hubby know…

Included in this book are interesting tidbits like the Significance of the Flag Folding Ceremony, which I have to admit is very interesting.

Also, ever wondered where the reference “A Cup of Joe” came from? The answer is in this book.

Want to learn how to make Rum Balls? We got you covered! Craving some Hot Mulled Cider? Well, crave no more! It’s all here!

No lie, this could possibly become your go-to cookbook in your home. Especially since I’m GIVING ONE AWAY!!

(Not my copy, of course. You can’t have that one. Sorry. I’m kind of attached to it.)

*So, here’s the deal.

I have one copy of The Military Wives Cookbook to give away. Here’s how to get it:

Leave a comment telling me your favorite family recipe. Bear in mind I may ask you for the actual recipe if it appeals to me, so be warned.

Post this giveaway on Twitter and then leave a comment here with your Twitter URL.

Facebook it!!! Send a Status Message out to your Facebook friends, and pop back here with the Status URL in the comments.

The contest ends Friday, May 8th at 5pm EST. The winner will be chosen at random and announced Friday evening.

This contest is only open to Residents of the United States and Canada.

C’mon…you KNOW you want the recipe for Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Cookies…. They are YUMMY!!!

(and no, I’m not sharing those!)

Thank You to Sourcebooks for providing me with a copy of the book and one to give away. Your kindness and generosity are very appreciated! Thanks again, Danielle!!

EcoStore + EcoFriendly = A Happy EcoHome

Melissa from EcoStore here in the United States contacted me and asked if I would like to try some of the Earth conscious and Earth friendly products she has. Since I have serious allergies, and usually after cleaning my house I am laid up for a couple days with sinus this and congestion that, I thought I sould give these a try. So she sent me some.

People? These products are AWESOME!

I’m usually a Method product user, and for many things I still am. (I’m still hoping someone finds a case of Pomegranate Tea Aroma Pills hidden away in the storeroom, because these? Just WILL NOT cut it.) However, Melissa told me to go peruse the website and pick some things I would be interested in trying.

In typical Shash fashion, I originally went to the wrong site. I went to the one for New Zealand (Where the company is based). And I picked many things. Many, many things. Many wonderful things. (Things not available in the U.S., by the way.)

And Melissa promptly told me that many things I picked was not available here in the U.S. I may have cried.

So she sent me the following:

Laundry Liquid
Vanilla Soap
All-Purpose Cleaner

Here are my thoughts:

Vanilla Soap

I wish I could say I got to enjoy the entire bar of this soap, because my first impression of it was that it lathered well, had a fresh, clean vanilla scent, and washed off easy. However, my sons STOLE the soap from my shower, and I never saw it again. What I liked about this soap was the vanilla scent. Most vanilla soaps I have tried have a cloying, vanilla scent that while I enjoy, can be a bit overpowering. This soap had none of that. It was light and the scent, not the soap lingered on my skin throughout the day. I will be ordering more of this soap.

Laundry Liquid

The Laundry Liquid I tried was fresh smelling, and in an easy-open container. However, I do have one complaint. In order to follow the package directions which told me how much to use, I had to use a measuring spoon. This did not sit well with my husband, who was a little bit taken aback that a kitchen utensil was being used to measure out my detergent. My suggestion would be to include a small plastic measuring cup or spoon with this. Besides that small oversight, the soap cleaned beautifully and my clothes came out soft and fresh smelling. The scent is slight, which is nice because it doesn’t overpower any perfumes I might be wearing. I appreciate that in a laundry soap.

All-Purpose Cleaner

The All-Purpose Cleaner is exactly that. The scent is fresh, and not cloying, and it does the job. This is the cleaner I use to wipe down my kitchen counters each night, and I love the power in this little bottle. A little definitely goes a long way.

She sent the products to me over a month ago, and I still have quite a bit left of the Laundry Soap and the All-Purpose Cleaner. A little definitely goes a long way. Which is, at least I think, what being eco-friendly is all about. Less product, less water, less waste. The products are priced right. There is only one thing missing…

MORE Products!! The New Zealand ECOStore website has so many products not available to us in the United States. Let’s get the word out so these products can wash up onto our shores!

Speaking of getting the word out, if you live in the Cincinnati, Ohio area, on Wednsday April 22, 2009 between 4- 6 PM, Disney will be promoting Ecostore USA ask Ecoman (Malcolm Rands) with a Meijer store tour at the 6550 Harrison Road Cincinnati Meijer with Radio Disney. This special event coincides with the premiere of the new Disney movie Earth.

The first 25 moms or dads that ask Malcolm the Ecoman a question will receive an organic Ecostore T-Shirt. There will be entertainment for the kids while mom and dad ask Malcolm ( Ecoman) questions.

Don’t miss it!

Yanni Voices: The Concert (Review)

I have been to many concerts. I was blessed to go to see The Police before their first implosion, and again when they reunited and performed in Miami. I’ve seen Genesis three times. Peter Gabriel puts on a heck of a show, if you are lucky enough to get tickets. Tori Amos put on one of the most amazing, intimate shows I’ve ever been to at Toad’s Place in New Haven.

Yanni Voices almost outdid her. Almost.

I saw a preview of Yanni Voices at BlissDom in February, and I met Ender Thomas and Nathan Pacheco. I told them I would see them in Orlando when they came. I don’t think they believed me.

They believe me now.

Spiff, Ender, and Shash
He remembered me from Nashville!!
And I wore purple for #Maddie!

If you’ve seen this show on DVD, or PBS, you are NOT getting the total package. You’re not even getting half of it. To truly experience it all, you have to go to a performance. Seriously.

I took my teenaged son with me who has Asperger’s Syndrome. He has issues with loud noises, and I thought this would be a good show to take him to as his first concert. Our seats were right down front, and I think the only people between us and the stage were family members of the performers.

It was sweet.

The stage was wrapped with a screen. We sat down, soon the lights dimmed, and the show began.

Yanni Intro

The best thing about this show was not the intimacy, even though that was nice. The best thing was Yanni himself, who was gregarious and friendly; stopping several times in between songs to engage the audience. (He lives in Florida, so we were like the “hometown crowd!”.) Most important was how proud he was of each and every performer on that stage that night. He acted like a proud father, showing off his children who have worked so hard with him to bring out their best. They definitely did, and it showed.

Ender Thomas

Ender brought the electric, his songs making you want to move in your seat.

Nathan Pacheco & Chloe

Nathan brought his amazing voice that simply sounds better live.

Chloe was playful, and her songs and stage presence were beautiful to behold.

Leslie Mills

Leslie was the immediate object of my teenaged son’s crush, her voice being one of the few times he brought his hands down from his ears all night.

My son

The show was intimate, and with the intermission, it clocked in at a little over 3 hours. I was never bored, and Yanni and crew came back for two encores before the curtain dropped for the final time. Every performer had a spotlight moment, and I’m talking about the large band/orchestra that backed Yanni and the Voices. It was magical.

And I’m not saying that because I live in the land of Disney.

I was granted two opportunities to go backstage. The first was when we arrived, and we saw Ender (in the photo above). After the show, we were invited again backstage to see Nathan, Chloe, and Leslie.

Shash, Chloe, and Spiff

Nathan and Shash

Leslie was a no-show. Bob tried really hard to find her, but to no avail. She sent me a Twitter later on thanking me for coming to the show, which was unexpected and very nice.

Bob and Shash

Just before we left, Ender came out to greet his guests, saw me and came over to thank me again and gave me a kiss on the cheek.

I may have swooned a little.

As we left, we went the wrong way and ended up out near the performer’s exit. Yanni was out there, signing autographs and chatting with the group of ladies who had congregated. Just as I made it there, he turned and headed toward his car. Bye, Yanni!

Even though I didn’t get a picture* with him or a chance to talk to him, it was nice to see him take time with the other ladies. He truly enjoys and appreciates his fans.

When Yanni Voices comes to your area, I implore (with a side of beg) you to go. It is an experience not to be missed.

*Okay, full disclosure time. First, I need to thank Bob Murray and The One2One Network for giving me the opportunity to see Yanni Voices live. I also need to thank Phyllis the security guard, who came over to me during the show while I was taking photos (without flash, that you can see here or here) to ask me to please put away my camera. I did, but again with the full disclosure, I still snapped some pics with my cameraphone. Shhhh. Because I’m a rebel. Or an idiot.
