And now, my thoughts:
I wanted to like this CD, and I have to say, it was a very good thing the days I listened to it I was in the company of very good friends that like Broadway musicals and theater. (Hat tip to Greg and Cathy!)
And I did like it. Sort of. I mean what’s not to like? It has songs from my youth, many of which I still listen to either on my iPod, or on the local Classic Rock radio station. I’m also a fan of really good cover bands, so I thought since this was Broadway, I’d have the best of the best cover bands performing the songs of my youth.
In some cases I did. In others, not so much.
One of the big things I found very frustrating was just as I was getting into a song, it switched to another in a medley or just stopped altogether. My friends kindly pointed out to me that that’s how it is done in musical theater. So I gave that a pass.
But it was still very frustrating.
The other thing that I found annoying was the music was used not so much to hear those songs again, but because they signify plot points in the show. I have yet to see the show (When it makes it’s way to Orlando I’m hoping to!) but until I do, it’s hard not to be confused because I don’t know fully what the context is. I saw a small snippet from the Tonys this past year and I have to say, it looked good.
Real, real, good. Kind of campy, just like the 80’s.
If you like Broadway musicals and you are a fan of the 1980’s, I think you will enjoy this CD. If you have already seen the performance, you will enjoy it more I think. I have a feeling you will also want to see the performance when it comes to your town.
I do.
A very good friend summed this up by saying: “This reminds me of The Wedding Singer on speed.” I have to agree with her.
